Welcome

We welcome guests and locals to have a look at our small historical museum through our website.

As early as the 1600s Qeqertarsuaq was known among European whalers. It was not until 1773 that the city was founded by a whaler and merchant named Svend Sandgreen.

The museum’s permanent exhibitions tells about the time Qeqertarsuaq was North Greenland’s capital (1782-1950).
We also have a fine collection of Jacob Danielsen's (1888 - 1938) paintings. Jakob Danielsen was a local hunter whose paintings became world famous through his good friend Philip Rosendal, Guvernor of North Greenland.

Disko Island is known for its beautiful nature, abundant flora and a special geology, which has lead to geological surveys on the island starting from 1848. Botanist Morten Porsild was the man, who took the initiative to establish a research station on the island.
Morten Porsild himself first came here in 1898 on a summer expedition, where he, among others, was involved in an investigation of the island's unique fauna.

There is an exhibition about the founder Morten Porsild and the Arctic Station at the museum. Arctic Station is still a research station
